An article by TJ Kirgin

In all my years on the river, I cannot remember the last time that I experience a true "Tropical Storm" on the Upper Mississippi.  I have been throug some doosey ; Tornadoes, Cold Fronts and Explosive River Storms that pass through and really mess things up.  But never before have I seen so much rain for so many hours on end
with sustained winds of over 25 mph and gusts of 45-50mph.

It was boys night as Thomas and I were playing Playstation 3 in the v berth of Time Well $pent till the Wii hours of the morning.  When we went to bed, the breeze was gentle and the air was warm and there wasn't a Mosquito in sight.

That was until about 5 AM this morning when I awoke to the boat rising up and down and the sound of rain spraying the fiberglass side of the boat like we were going through an automated car wash.  Once it began, it never let up, winds were strong and constant from the North, North East.  Waves actually formed in the harbor and the docks/boats began to rise up and down as if we were on the main channel of Lake of the Ozarks.  Rain was horizontal and leaves from the trees were everywhere.  This deluge continued for many hours until sometime around 9 or 10 am when the winds dropped below 20 and the rain became more like mist.  It was never a scary situtation, simply a unique one that I watched with with child like fascination.  Leaving the river was a bit of a chore too, as every road out was covered in 4-5 inches of water.

Unfortunately all that water has to go somewhere and that somewhere is the river.  Looks like flood number 5 for the year is just hours away.

Re: Land / Cleanup / Safety - Flood Cleanup

A round of applause to the A and G Dockers and their "Fire Hose Brigade" for all that they did this past weekend.  What a difference! They made a lot of progress around G-Dock/Parking Lot and they even went the extra mile all the way past the front gate........ They also had the bravery to take on the inside of the sheds with there "Fire Hoses/Weapons". Also you can't say enough about Harry Steele's continuing efforts and accomplishments. This man has "Stamina".

During the flood I did spent every night back on my boat. The portage with my wave runner to get back and forth extended almost to Woodland/Sharky's entrance on Blaze Station Rd. Sometimes very dark, sometimes very rainy and sometimes both. Had to fumigate my wave runner a few times. There's a lot of critters at the edge of floodwater. As far as any theft or vandalism, to my knowledge, there was less than $50 worth at DCYC/Harbor since the flood began. For some added security I left both of my TVs on within my boat. Ron was at the other end of the Harbor for nighttime and early morning patrol. Harry was everywhere! Many boaters did  visit their boats. The attendance at the pool the last couple of weekends was amazingly high. There were 30 plus last Saturday and Sunday. The pool goers were all in good spirits and wine and beer and BBQ!

Back to cleanup.....

During my commutes I have been able to observe lots including the massive amounts of debris that has been left all around our property. Flower box 4"x4"s from around the bird houses are scattered. I retrieved many pieces from the flood water but we still lost a lot. Picnic tables have moved around in precarious positions. Seen cats scurrying around for food. Hmmm haven't seen many cats lately. Raccoons have been abundant and the rascals they are have gotten into a few things. I'm on Harry's email list. So I have read all of his reports. He's done a great job! This morning I did a walk about all the way down to Polestar. The woods on the East side of Hwy V has about a dump truck load of debris in it. The debris starts at G gate behind the dumpsters and goes all the way out past Polestar. I'm not sure of our responsibilities on the entire ditch but we need to talk about it. Our fence along Port Charles's property on the left side of our road coming in has lots and lots of debris. I believe we should be involved with some of that cleanup. As far as trees, grass and bushes we need to wait a couple of weeks and re-access the damage to them. Some how grass has an amazing resilience to flood water but we might consider some seeding. The parking lot, G-Dock side has fared well. The parking lot on the club side is still under water. We will know more about any insurance coverage/claims in a couple of weeks. The "Fire Hose Brigade" did a great job water blasting the inside of the sheds. I noticed big fans running to expedite the drying process. We never did loose electricity within the harbor. Ron took control of our Dock/Flood/Cable System. He was on top of that daily. There are about 20 adjustable cum-alongs that secure our docks to land that need adjusted almost daily. The reason for the cable system is to keep pressure off of the tall black spud poles. When the water breaches the land upstream of our clubhouse there is a lot of current through our harbor. Thanks Ron! Oh yes and then there's the bugs and mosquito problems of a flood. Note: Harry, if you haven't yet please call our spider guy. There has also been an unusual amount of weeds growing from the Styrofoam/docks. This will be taken care of soon. I will contact the City of St. Charles about our entire harbor being and staying on their list for mosquito fogging. The water is down 8 feet now from it's high. But it looks like we are still a week away from driving across to the club/pool. I believe that with the ramp system that Sonny and others have created will allow the club to be open and accessible from A-Dock this weekend. Thanks Sonny and friends! As Harry has mentioned the pool has never closed and it is like a beautiful oasis. There's a lot to do around our harbor. It's somewhat overwhelming to try to absorb everything at once. Let us just take it one thing at a time and one piece at a time. I would like to use a word that I learned about from Anthony Robbins. He called it "Chunking". In other words when you have a project or problem that seems too large break it down into smaller pieces that are more palatable, controllable and manageable. The desired end results will soon follow. On another good note the flowers/plants that I removed from the front gate are surviving on G-Dock. I put them in buckets, flower pots and totes. You'll soon see plant life return at our entrance.

Please let Harry or I know about any of our/your cleanup comments or observations.

Let us go forward calmly, collectively and with diligence. Let us all take on this challenge to clean, repair and restore our DCYC property one thing/piece at a time! Boats too!

P.S. The water is on for boat cleaning and the dumpsters are back.

Please be safe during this time of repair and restoration.

Spring Article

Spring is upon us, lots to do. This year I'm looking forward to my position with DCYC/Land.
One project at hand is the repair/replacement of our road between the gates. I am in the information gathering stage of this project. After a lot of information, bids, analysis etc. are gathered, discussed and talked about recommendations will come forward. Another maintainance project will be the painting/restoration of our pool. It has been three seasons since the last time that the pool was painted. No surprises expected. As always your imput is welcomed!

I grew up working for my dad at Deutschmann Florist/Greenhouses. My Grandfather started the business within his 90 acre farm in 1913 in Des Peres, Mo. A resemblance of the original 12.5 acre florist/greenhouse portion of the farm still remains on Manchester Road. My dads brother Clarence, cousin George and some of their families are the current proprietors of Deutschmann Florist. So if you see some of my energy go in the direction of landscape beautification/flowers you'll understand.

This spring please take a look around our DCYC estate and think about what could and should be done. As always your comments and recommendations are welcome.

I am honored to be a part of the caretaking of our DCYC estate.

DuckTales Coming Soon!

Duck Club Yacht Club Winter Update 2/22/08

As you may know, the Duck Tales needs a new Editor. Mike Holaus did a wonderful job as our Editor for the last two years but has decided to step down. If you are interested in becoming our new Editor please contact Commodore Lindell Gray, (314) 578-0482.

The 2008 Board of Directors decided to update our Members with this letter. The Board has also initiated a Duck Club web site that TJ Kirgin is currently developing. Please check TJ’s excellent progress at docktales.net and also provide your contact information.

We really need your e-mail address so we can send future updates via e-mail versus snail mail – snail mail costs over $125 for postage and printing!

TJ Kirgin comments:

While we are in development of DuckclubYC.com we have build a forum site for Dock owners called www.DockTales.net

in this site, you can leave posts (comments, questions, jokes, etc) in each of the respective dock sets or on the main page.  You can link to the Duck Club master site from there, plus there is plenty of interesting related web links to browse.  We are making great progress and the site is now functional.  We are working out a few bugs with the password protection and the events calendars.  Please enjoy the site and offer any suggestions.  Angie and I are looking forward to seeing you all this season and some Time Well $pent.  The classified section is ready for stuff to be sold, the bilge is ready for images and the calendar is ready for more events!  Please provide pictures for the photo albums, as well as other relevant content, links or questions by emailing me at BilgeRat@DockTales.net
