The world-class Duck Cub Marina and Yacht Club is located in the center of the 39-mile long Alton Lake.
The 114-unit “dockominium” features 40-, 50-, and 60-foot covered, floating docks in a protected harbor on the Mississippi River, near St. Louis. All docks include electricity and fresh drinking water.
The private Duck Club Yacht Club includes a 125-seat restaurant (currently under renovation)–featuring an impressive stone fireplace and etched glass dividers–and lounge, swimming pool and a 75-seat enclosed poolside bar.
I am going to go WAY BACK, as a matter of a fact there was a Yacht Club here before Duck Club. It was called Center Point and at one point during the 60’s and 70’s it was the place to be on the upper Mississippi River.
Center Point was owned by a gentleman named Dave Robertson. Dave was said to own not only Center Point, but also, Riviera (Now Port Charles) and Hideaway Harbor (now a county park). Dave sold Riviera (a real dump) to my parents, Tom and Marylin Kirgin on 3/15/1984. Center Point at that time was an abandoned marina with a club house and pool, about where ours is now but in a much different layout and not as high above the flood line.
I remember the marina shallow enough to wade across with sunken cruisers in the center. Between Skateboarding in the pool and exploring the shipwrecks, the place was a wonderland for some river rats like me and a great source for scars and emergency room visits.
Some time in the mid to late 1980’s, a man named Kenny Shriver, from Florida, along with a Condominium Development Company bought the land and began development. The Duck Club was so named because of the Prestigious Duck Hunting Club directly behind it. The marina was dug out and the clubhouse was built. The docks were sold off as Condominiums and the Duck Club Association was born.
This is just the fragmented beginning of the story. As I interview more people and receive more images. The story will change and grow.
